On Thursday, September 7, an 8.1 magnitude earthquake struck  in the Gulf of Tehuantepec off the southern coast of Mexico, near state of Chiapas. More than 100 people were killed and many others injured.

Nearly two weeks later, on Tuesday, September 19, a 7.1 earthquake struck in central Mexico, killing hundreds of people and injuring thousands. According to media reports, the quake occurred on the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, which killed an estimated 10,000 people.

The following day on Wednesday, September 20, Hurricane Maria hit the island of Puerto Rico with a vengeance. Relief efforts are slow in coming and much of the island’s infrastructure has damaged. Many people on the island still lack food, water, and electricity. Getting around the island remains difficult because of the debris that still remains from the winds of Maria that destroyed buildings.

In all three natural disasters, lives have been lost, and many survivors are still in need of new homes, food, jobs, and mental health assistance. Piles of rubble from collapsed buildings remain in both Mexico and Puerto Rico. More has been lost than has been reported in the media.

Hurricanes Irma and Maria also wreaked havoc on the Caribbean Islands, such as Antigua, Barbados, Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis. Government officials are still appealing for help from the international community. On some islands residents still have not returned to their homes. Barbuda’s mandatory evacuation order was recently lifted. Only a few construction crews and relief workers had been on the island. Ronald Sanders, Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to the United States, said the evacuation meant “that for the first time in 300 years, there’s been no one living on Barbuda full time.”

Let us pray the following prayer points those who suffered losses due to these natural disasters: Continue reading
