Let’s Celebrate Jesus Christ

As we prepare our hearts to celebrate Christmas Day, let’s not get lost in the crass commercialism that’s around us during this time of the year, but let’s remember the real reason for the season – Jesus Christ.

The Christmas story begins with Joseph and Mary having to leave their home in Nazareth and travel to Bethlehem due to an order by the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus. The emperor issued a decree that a census should be taken and had to return to the place of his or her ancestors to be counted for the census. Failure to do so meant death. Needless to say, it was an inconvenience for many people to make a pilgrimage to their homeland at the time, particularly Mary and Joseph. For one, they had to leave the safety of their family and friends and take about a four-day journey on their own. Secondly, because the trip was about four days long on foot, they needed extra money for food and possibly places to stay. Thirdly, they needed money to pay their taxes once they arrived in Bethlehem for Bible commentators say that taxes had to be paid at the time of registration. Most importantly, Mary was pregnant and ready to give birth at any time. Seeing that this was her first child, she was probably concerned about when and where she would have her baby during her long journey.

Mary, however, took comfort in the Word that she had previously received from the Lord. Some months earlier, Mary received a personal visitation from an angel from heaven who delivered a very special word from the Lord:

Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end! (Luke 1: 30-33, NLT)

Mary did not know how it would all play out, but she received and believed the Word of the Lord.

Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her. (Luke 1:38, NLT)

Although this story happened thousands of years ago, what is just as true today as it was then is that Jesus Christ was born. The Son of the Most High, who entered the world as a little baby, and who would later take on the sins of the world and reconcile man back to God, is now sitting at the right hand of His Father in heaven, and ruling over His Kingdom that will never end!

If you find yourself in dire straits this Christmas season, receive the Word of the Lord that was given to Mary: Jesus Christ. Our only help, hope, and comfort comes through Jesus Christ.
