Prayer Alert: Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Caribbean

Embed from Getty ImagesLet us remember to pray for the people in Central Mexico and Puerto Rico who are recovering from natural disasters that devastated their lands.

On Thursday, September 7, an 8.1 magnitude earthquake struck  in the Gulf of Tehuantepec off the southern coast of Mexico, near state of Chiapas. More than 100 people were killed and many others injured.

Nearly two weeks later, on Tuesday, September 19, a 7.1 earthquake struck in central Mexico, killing hundreds of people and injuring thousands. According to media reports, the quake occurred on the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, which killed an estimated 10,000 people.

The following day on Wednesday, September 20, Hurricane Maria hit the island of Puerto Rico with a vengeance. Relief efforts are slow in coming and much of the island’s infrastructure has damaged. Many people on the island still lack food, water, and electricity. Getting around the island remains difficult because of the debris that still remains from the winds of Maria that destroyed buildings.

In all three natural disasters, lives have been lost, and many survivors are still in need of new homes, food, jobs, and mental health assistance. Piles of rubble from collapsed buildings remain in both Mexico and Puerto Rico. More has been lost than has been reported in the media.

Hurricanes Irma and Maria also wreaked havoc on the Caribbean Islands, such as Antigua, Barbados, Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis. Government officials are still appealing for help from the international community. On some islands residents still have not returned to their homes. Barbuda’s mandatory evacuation order was recently lifted. Only a few construction crews and relief workers had been on the island. Ronald Sanders, Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to the United States, said the evacuation meant “that for the first time in 300 years, there’s been no one living on Barbuda full time.”

Let us pray the following prayer points those who suffered losses due to these natural disasters: Continue reading

Rosh Hashanah: A New Year on God’s Divine Calendar

We have entered a special and sacred time of the year. Rosh Hashana (which, in Hebrew, means “head of the year) begins a New Year on the Jewish Calendar and is observed from the evening of Wednesday, September 20 and ends on the evening of Friday, September 22.

Most importantly, this is the most sacred time of the year on God’s Divine Calendar because Rosh Hashana begins a 10-day period called the High Holy Days. It is also called the “Days of Awe” and “Days of Repentance.” The 10 days end on Yom Kippur, which is Hebrew for “Day of Atonement.”

Yom Kippur (which also means, “covering for sin”) is traditionally observed with a period of intense prayer and asking God and others for forgiveness. This year, Yom Kippur begins on the evening of Friday, September 29 and ends in the evening of Saturday, September 30.

God ordained Yom Kippur as a sacred day for a nation, as well as individuals, to deal with their sin (Leviticus 16:29-30). In the Old Testament, Israel’s High Priest would enter into the Holy of Holies, the innermost chamber of the Temple in Jerusalem, to present a sacrifice and ask God to forgive the sins of the people. The annual ritual served as a reminder that perfect atonement had not yet been made.

Believers in Christ are not under the Old Testament Law because Jesus Christ became the perfect atoning sacrifice for our sins. Although Jesus Christ has fulfilled God’s Law, Christians can still use this 10-day period to reflect on the redemptive work of Jesus Christ on Calvary’s cross and draw closer to Him.  Continue reading

God Is Speaking. Are we Listening?

God has been speaking to His Church through recent events and the question is: “Are we listening?”  As the herald of the Good News of Jesus Christ, the Church has not represented the Kingdom of God well in this world system. Our ears are deaf to the voice of God and our commitment to Him is lukewarm, at best.

God is using the elements—wind, rain, and fire—to wake up His Church in America because we have fallen asleep. The Church has been fairly quiet about the Opioid crisis and has not condemned racism or spoken out against the division and violence that permeates this country, as witnessed in Charlottesville, Virginia in August. While a few voices have spoken up to repent on behalf of the country, overall the American Church has been silent.

Thankfully, some local churches are stepping up to help hurricane victims in the Caribbean Islands, Texas and Florida, where the harsh winds, hard rains and epic flooding destroyed church buildings, houses and other structures. Additionally, calls for prayer have come for the wildfires to come under control in parts of Oregon and California, and for Mexico after a magnitude 8.2 earthquake hit on September 8.

God is raising up new voices that are starting to be heard. These people not afraid to speak judgment over the Church for forsaking the ways of God—as spelled out in The Holy Bible—and creating its own way to worship while enjoying this world system. Prayer Alert: USA in Crisis!

United in Christ Ministries of Canton issues a call to all Believers in Jesus Christ to pray that the United States of America will withstand the shaking that is going on across the land at this moment.

To say that this country is in crisis is an understatement. News reports on any given day show suffering, hurt, anger, violence and even murder—seemingly without any consequences. We have truly become the Divided States of America! Yet, our country is still one nation under God who loves us and will do whatever He deems appropriate to bring us back to Himself .

It’s up to the Church—not the denominational, brick-and-morter building that Christians visit on the weekend, but those who name the Name of Jesus Christ—to step up and do our part and pray for this country.

We are witnessing the devastating effects of what happens when the Church and its leaders take their focus off of preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in order to conform to societal norms and enjoy the pleasures the world’s system has to offer. We commend those local churches and leaders who are not ashamed or afraid to promote Jesus Christ for fear of being called, “traditional” and “religious.” Continue reading

Prayer Alert: Hurricane Harvey Crisis

Embed from Getty ImagesHurricane Harvey survivors begin the daunting task of re-establishing their lives after an epic and unprecedented flood devastated life as they once knew it.

On Friday August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Texas Gulf Coast and was downgraded to a tropical storm that left a path of destruction in the Houston area.

Photos of boats on flooded streets rescuing residents, and helicopters airlifting men, women and children to safety will be etched in the memories of the American public for quite some time.

In 2005, another great American disaster—Hurricane Katrina–displaced thousands of people. Many never returned to New Orleans and it appears as if we are about to see the same scenario in Texas.

Where are displaced residents whose homes were destroyed going to go? And how will uninsured homeowners pay for repairs? Even homeowners who have flood insurance through the federal government’s National Flood Insurance Program may be willing for a while to get money from the program that is $25 billion in debt. New Release: The Art of Spiritual Warfare: A Manual

For book purchase or preview, click on image for details.

We are at war! Believers in Jesus Christ are under attack by demonic forces that attempt to get us off track and stop us from accomplishing the purpose and plans God has for our lives. It is imperative that we take the authority that we have in Jesus Christ and fight back! Elizabeth Cobbs, an associate with United in Christ Ministries of Canton, has written The Art of Spiritual Warfare: A Manual, a timely book that explains spiritual warfare and how Believers in Jesus Christ must receive Divine strategies and tactics to defeat Satan when he attacks.

Read a portion of the “Introduction” below of The Art of Spiritual Warfare: A Manual, available now at Amazon.com:

“Our enemy, Satan, can and will subdue Christians who do not acknowledge that they are in a battle or believe fighting is necessary. Therefore, it is not possible for Christians to defeat Satan without engaging in spiritual warfare.

So, how do we know when we are involved in spiritual warfare? There are several ways of knowing, but the most telling signs are when situations in our lives spiral out of control, and we begin to feel overwhelmed, confused and frustrated and nothing that we do seems to succeed. In addition, demonic attacks have a tendency to occur especially when we are on the brink of change, whether it is a promotion, a call to ministry or any type of advancement that God has ordained for our lives. Prayer Alert: Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017

The U.S. Senate is attempting to vote in July on the Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017, the healthcare bill that would replace the  Affordable Care Act.

There has been much debate among the politicians and media about the particulars of the bill, which this post will not address. There are plenty of media reports on television, radio, and the Internet on the subject in the event that gives updates on the issue.

We are issuing this prayer alert because this proposed measure could leave a many Americans, particularly lower-income Americans, without any health coverage because they will not be able to afford it. In addition, people with pre-existing conditions may also find themselves without coverage.

While the health care bill is expected to save billions of dollars and help reduce the U.S. budget deficit, it is also designed to phase out the expansion of Medicaid which provides health care for those who cannot afford it. Seniors would also pay higher premiums while  the bill would “repeal or delay” $541 billion in taxes, particularly on higher income Americans and insurers. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the Senate bill would increase the number of people who are uninsured by 22 million in 2026 relative to the number under current law.

Please pray that unless the Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017 is fair and equitable to all Americans, that God would intervene and not allow this bill—or anything similar to it—to pass.

God’s Divine Calendar: Understanding the Biblical Months

In recent years, there has been an interest among Christians about God’s Biblical calendar and how it can be used as a guide for our spiritual growth and development. Seldom, when we are reading the Bible, do we connect biblical events with the months in which they occurred. Nor do we realize that the principles and blessings that God has established in the Bible are also for us today.

United in Christ Ministries of Canton has discovered the importance of these months and has published, God’s Divine Calendar: Understanding the Biblical Months. God Himself established a Biblical calendar for His people to recognize special celebrations and seasons that occur within the year.  The months—and the activities in each month—are found in the Bible, God’s Holy Word.

Although Christians are not obligated to observe biblical celebrations or holidays, such as Passover or Pentecost, we can learn how and why their spiritual significance is still important to us today. What’s more, each biblical month points to some aspect of Jesus Christ. God, in His infinite wisdom, has divinely designed these times to glorify His Son, and we can take advantage of the spiritual blessings available to us through Jesus Christ.

We, at United in Christ Ministries of Canton pray that through this book, you will develop a deeper appreciation for the Bible and God’s plan for His people. You will see God’s Hand consistently at work through His biblical calendar which He has established as yet another way to bless His people and magnify His Son, Jesus Christ.

“Resurrection” by John Wright Follette

The resurrection of Jesus was God’s seal and act of approval signifying that His death was sufficient. Jesus never resurrected Himself – God raised Him from the dead. God the Father was pleased, and satisfied with His victorious life and death. In raising Him from the dead, God gave testimony that all was satisfactory.

In Acts 1:8, the Lord is not using the word “witness” to refer to someone who gets up and gives a testimony. He is referring to a person (with the power of the Spirit upon him) who is willing to let his life be slain in order that the life of Christ may be lived through him. Subsequently, he becomes a witness or a testimony of the power of God.

Jesus’ disciples were a witness because they operated in the power that God used to raise Jesus from the dead.  When did Jesus tell His disciples, “I will pour the Holy Spirit upon you?” It was after His resurrection, for now there was a resurrection quality in the power that was to come upon them. As a result, the disciples always ministered in resurrection power.

Our lives are also a witness of the Holy Spirit’s resurrection power. You might ask, “How can that be?” It is so because the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead, now dwells in us! We have access to this power because God dwells in us through His Holy Spirit. As we do the work God has given us to do, He enables us with power that exceeds our comprehension and expectations.
